IS THIS THE RIGHT PRODUCT FOR YOU?
Retinal is the right choice for you!
Retinaldehyde, the active ingredient of our Retinal Level Up, is best use as an upgrade of your existing skincare routine. This way you’ll achieve maximum results while minimizing possible side-effects.
Since you already have a routine, you’re using SPF (well done!) and your skin isn’t very sensitive or very dry, retinal can be great for your skin.
Start slow (2-3 times weekly) with the STARTER version. Always use SPF the next day.
Results and effects always depend on your skin’s condition and behaviour - some see results sooner, others later. The goal is to achieve a noticeable effect without unwanted skin behaviour!
If you need any help adding retinal to your routine, get in touch, we’re happy to help!
Retinal may be right for you, but ...
Retinaldehyde, the active ingredient of our Retinal Level Up, is a strong retinoid (stronger than retinOL). Retinoids can cause skin photosensitivity, that's why using SPF the next day is crucial.
You can add Retinal to your skincare routine, but you really should consider getting a good, eays to use SPF cream as well. If you need help with that, get in touch - we don't have our own SPF cream, but we're happy to recommend other good, trustworthy brands.
* photosensitivity means your skin becomes more sensitive to sunlight (UV rays) and that can cause hyperpigmentions (pigment spots) - exactly the opposite of what we want.
You really should build a skincare routine first.
Your skin is the right "candidate" for retinal (you don't have very sensitive or dry skin), but you really should first focus on building a good skincare routine. Cleansing and proper care are essential before including strong actives such as retinaldehyde.
With a good skincare routine you'll prepare your skin for Retinal Level Up. It will help you achieve maximum results while minimizing the chances of unwanted side effects (redness, dryness).
A good routine will already make a difference in how your skin looks and feels, so the results will be even better when you upgrade it with retinal. A daily routine will also help you avoid the usual mistakes of beginners.
No, retinal is probably not a good choice right now.
Retinaldehyde, the active ingredient of our Retinal Level Up, is a strong retinoid (stronger than retinOL). Retinoids can dry out your skin or cause other reactions (redness, dryness). That's why we think retinal isn't the right choice for your sensitive or dry skin right now.
You should focus on strenghtening your skin barrier and hydration. This can make a big difference in how your skin looks and feels! Over time, your skin sensitivity can decrease as well. If you need help building such a routine, get in touch, we're happy to help.
That doesn't mean you can never use any retinoids. First, start with a good barrier-strengthening routine, and then you can think about slowly incorporating retinoids - perhaps starting with weaker ones (such as retinyl palmitate) and then movin on to retinal.
What can you expect?
Retinal will stimulate your epidermis and boost skin regeneration. The desired effect is a smoother, firmer skin with fewer skin problems.
Because it also promotes collagen production, retinal works against premature skin-aging while keeping your skin soft and elastic. Numerous studies and tests on real users have shown it to be an amazingly effective active ingredient!
What will happen in the beginning?
As this is a powerful ingredient, it will take some time for your skin to become accustomed to it. That’s why we recommend starting with a lower concentration (see usage rules below, they are important).
At first, your skin may feel drier than usual. A tingling sensation is also common, as is slight redness. These side effects disappear quickly as your skin builds up tolerance.
When will you see results?
You should notice some effects by the end of first month. Your skin should keep improving from there.
Ingredients
Encapsulated retinal
Retinaldehyde is substantially more active than their Vitamin A counterparts. This amazing active exfoliates and lightens hyperpigmentations, reduces oil and bacteria (which can help clear acne), remodels the epidermis/dermis by actively stimulating collagen/elastin production.
Niacinamide
Niacinamide is form of vitamin B3 and one of the most effective and popular actives in skincare. It has a bunch of beneficial effects that help your skin look and feel younger, healthier and more resilient.
Ceramides
Ceramides that strengthen the natural lipid barrier of dry and aging skin. It also has an excellent ability to maintain the skin’s moisture balance. Because retinal can dry your skin out, we’ve added ceramides to offset this drawback.
Phytosterols
Made from natural fatty acids, this active has an important role in the skin-barrier function. It helps retain moisture in your skin and slows down TEWL (transepidermal water loss).
This product contains NO:

How to Use
RETINAL LEVEL UP is a powerful, advanced formulation. Follow the rules below so you achieve maximum results without any side effects.
Rule 1: start low, start slow
Start with a lower concentration (0,05%). This will give your skin time to get accustomed (build tolerance) to retinal. After using a tube (one cycle), you can switch to 0,15% RETINAL LEVEL UP. But please keep in mind: it’s not the percentage of retinal that matters, but the effect on your skin. Find out what works best for you!
Begin slowly – 2 or 3 times per week for a couple of weeks. Then you can slowly increase the frequence to 5 times per week, but this is not a rule nor a must – observe your skin and how it tolerates this strong retinoid.
Rule 2: evenings only
Only use it in the evening. Apply SPF protection in the morning, if you can. Never use retinal in the morning, especially if you’re going out in the sun.
Rule 3: use a small amount
A pea-sized amount is usually enough for the whole face. There is no need to use a lot, this is not a regular daily cream. Overdoing retinal can dry out your skin.
How often to use
Everything depends on your skin, but here’s a general guideline. Don’t take age too seriously, retinal doesn’t know how old you are, but it’s a good place to start – you can then adapt your skincare routine as you go:
Your age:
20-30: 2 times a week
30-40: 3 times a week
40+: 4 times a week
How to use
Apply to clean face. Avoid the area around the eyes.
We recommend you first use a hydrating product that also strenghtens the skin barrier (for example, NO BARRIER BETWEEN US facial essence).
Don’t combine with …
On the evenings you use RETINAL LEVEL UP, avoid products with vitamin C, salicylic acid or AHA acids, because irriation can occur. You can use them the next morning, if you wish.
A few extra warnings
Don’t use during pregnancy.
Don’t use on damaged or irritated skin.
Stop use if a more intense skin reaction occurs (but a gentle tingling sensation or the feeling of dry skin is normal, especially if this is your first time using retinal).
External use only. Not for children. Avoid eyes and skin around the eyes.
Skin Types
RETINAL LEVEL UP is generally suitable for all skin types. It’s a product targeted at improving skin problems independent of skin type.
If your skin is more on the dry side, we recommend you first use a lipid-base serum (such as BAKUCHIOL). As usual, discover what works best for you!
