What are pre & postbiotics?
Prebiotics are substances that act as food for the good bacteria on your skin. Those types of bacteria act as your skin’s defences (eliminating bad microbes, keeping a healthy pH) so it’s important to keep them in top shape – especially if you have problems with your skin.
Postbiotics are substances that are produced by fermenting bacteria. They don’t need to be alive to work – unlike probiotics!
Your skin’s living shield
Pre and postbiotics can help regulate and improve your skin’s microbiota. But the effect can be different for each person, because every skin has a unique microbiome. Find out what works best for you and your skin’s living shield!
What about probiotics?
There’s a lot of hype around probiotics (we love probiotics in our food – be it kimchi, kefir or sourdough!), but in skincare, things are not that simple.
Probiotics are live bacteria and they will not survive in a skincare product (it can be achieved under certain conditions, but it’s expensive, awkward to package and transport and there’s still a good chance they won’t survive very long once you open your product).
You will see many brands claim they have probiotics in their products, but in reality, they have pre and/or postbiotics. We believe that is misleading, that is why we use (and SAY!) PRE and POST biotics in our essence – they can have great benefits for your skin without the issues that come with probiotics.
What is a facial essence?
It’s a facial mist with a high percentage of active ingredients, formulated to target specific needs of your skin. It’s a great product for restoring hydration, balancing the skin or strengthening the skin barrier. Our essences have anti-ageing and anti-acne properties. They are similar to serums, but more lightweight.
How to include an essence in your daily skincare routine?
For most people, a face essence should be the first product on clean skin. You can then follow it with serums, creams or whatever your routine consists of.
Combining water-based serums with essences
In a way, essences are similar to water-based serums. They both contain active ingredients and hydrate your skin. However, our essences are formulated for specific skincare needs and with active ingredients not present in our serums. You can definitely combine our essences with serums!
The question is: do you need to? Depends on your skin goals. If your goal is just hydration, you do not need to use both. But if you’re looking to improve a specific problem with your skin, a combination might work wonders for you. As always, it’s worth discovering what works best for your skin – so you can have the best skin possible!
If you combine an essence with one of our hydrating serums (Hey, Gorgeous! or Face It, You Love Me), apply the essence first, then the serum.
